At The Foot Company, we offer our patients the highest level of care, which is why we‘ve partnered with Endeavour Imaging to enhance our services and patient outcomes.

Dexa scans play a crucial role in early detection and effective pain management in podiatry, as well as optimising strength and conditioning programs. By utilising Dexa scans, we can accurately assess bone density, body composition, and muscle health, allowing us to tailor treatment plans to individual needs.

Whether diagnosing conditions like osteoporosis or guiding athletes in injury prevention and performance enhancement, Dexa scans provide invaluable insights that empower our patients to achieve their health and fitness goals with precision and confidence.

What is a DEXA Scan?

DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is a medical imaging technique used to measure bone mineral density (BMD) and body composition. It utilises two X-ray beams with different energy levels to assess bone health, detect osteoporosis, and evaluate fracture risk by determining the density of your bones. Additionally, DEXA scans provide detailed insights into body composition, including the proportions of fat, muscle, and bone in your body, making it a valuable tool for both clinical and fitness assessments.

Who can get a DEXA scan?

  • Athletes, body builders, endurance athletes, fitness enthusiasts, individuals on weight management or strength programs
  • Elderly and adults
  • Individuals with risk factors – family history, chronic disease or conditions that would affect bone density
  • To assess bone health, diagnose osteoporosis and monitor bone density
  • Post menopausal women – who may be at risk for osteoporosis.
  • Individuals who want to assess overall bone density and body composition

How do I prepare for a DEXA scan?

Preparing for a DEXA or DXA scan is a breeze. No need for fasting or strenuous routines. Just wear comfortable clothing and avoid wearing any metal accessories. If you have had a barium x-ray or an x-ray with a dye injection / nuclear medicine study or may be pregnant; please advise our staff prior to your consultation. We’ll guide you through the process effortlessly, ensuring your experience is as smooth as possible.

What does a DEXA scan test for and who can get one?

Curious about what a DEXA or DXA scan tests for? It goes beyond just measuring your bone density. This comprehensive scan evaluates your risk for osteoporosis, assesses body fat distribution, and provides valuable information for optimizing your fitness and nutrition goals. From tracking changes in muscle mass to pinpointing areas of potential improvement in your body composition, DEXA ensures a thorough analysis to support your overall health and wellness journey.

Do I need a referral for a DEXA scan and can I claim this on HICAPS?

Beauty of getting a DEXA or DXA scan from Endeavour Imaging means you don’t need a referral. If you attend a consultation with one of our allied health professionals, you may be eligible to get a private health fund rebate. Please note, Medicare rebates are not covered; however, if you have a referral from your general practitioner to see one of our allied health professionals under item code 10962, your consultation may be covered.

How do I get my DEXA scan results?

Once your scan is complete, accessing your results is a breeze. Within a short turnaround time, your general practitioner or referring specialist will receive a detailed report outlining your body composition and bone health. Our team is here to guide you through your results, empowering you to make informed decisions about your health journey.

Who can interoperate my DEXA scan results?

We recommend DEXA or DXA scan results to be interpreted by qualified healthcare professionals such as medical doctors, radiologists, endocrinologists, or other specialists trained in bone density assessment and interpretation. These professionals have the expertise and training necessary to accurately analyse DEXA scan data and provide appropriate recommendations based on the results. It’s essential to consult with a healthcare provider who is knowledgeable in bone health and DEXA scanning to ensure accurate interpretation and proper guidance for any necessary follow-up actions.

Is a DEXA scan safe?

Rest assured, a DEXA or DXA scan is completely safe. It involves minimal radiation exposure, equivalent to what you’d experience in a day of sunlight exposure or a short flight. Our state-of-the-art equipment and trained professionals prioritise your safety and well-being at every step.

How long between DEXA or DXA scans should I wait?

We recommend waiting 12 weeks until you schedule your follow-up DEXA or DXA scan. This means you will have enough time to implement any lifestyle changes or interventions discussed based on your initial scan results, allowing for meaningful progress to be measured and tracked accurately during your next assessment.
